The difference between a slip, a trip and a fall at work

Slips, trips and falls are defined according to how they cause a personal injury:

Slips – take place when there is not enough contact friction. Therefore, there is alack of grip between the walking surface and the sole of footwear. This can also be caused by water and other liquids or even inappropriate shoes.

Trips – occur when the foot is prevented from moving forward due to the foot abruptly hitting an obstruction such as:

  • A protruding single box, pallet, or stack
  • Fire-extinguisher, pot plant, waste-paper bin
  • Snagged carpeting or loose stair nosing
  • Unsecured trailing cable(s)

Falls – can result from a slip or trip but can be caused separately. There are two basic types of falls:

  • Same level falls which can be due to cracked, uneven walking surfaces.
  • Falls from heights involving roofs, ladders, scaffolding, towers, moving platforms and safety harnesses.

Preventing slips trips and falls – what should your employer be doing?

Lack of risk assessments in the workplace are often the reason why these accidents occur. By law, it is a requirement that employers manage health and safety in the workplace to reduce accidents to employees, contractors and visitors.

Sufficient lighting

It is a requirement under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) regulations for employers to provide safe and sufficient lighting. This will enable employees and visitors to safely enter areas such as entries, walkways and stairwells. It is important that lamps are replaced to prevent injuries that could take place.

What does the law say about slips trips and falls?

The Health and Safety at Work  (HSW) requires employers to ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone who may be affected by their work, so far as is reasonably practicable. This includes taking steps to control the risk of slips and trips.

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations  require floors to be suitable, in good condition and free from obstructions. People should be able to move around safely.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations  specifically refers to slip, trip and fall accidents, requiring employers to assess risks (including slip and trip risks) and, where necessary, take
action to address them.

If employer negligence can be proven and you have suffered injuries as a result of this, you may be eligible to make a  claim for compensation.
