Road Traffic Accident in Scotland

It’s time to talk about Road Traffic Accidents. Whilst driving home from work one evening, five friends who car share were involved in an accident and were struck by an on-coming vehicle, leaving one with life threatening injuries.

The accident happened on a busy road, leaving Aberdeen.

Police Scotland say the road had to be closed as investigations took place at the scene.

All five passengers and the driver of the other vehicle where injured and needed hospital attention, meaning weeks away from work adding stress at a time when it was least needed.

Three passengers made a full recovery. However, two have remained in hospital for a prolonged period, meaning more time away from work and causing a loss of earnings and precious time away from their loved ones.

Tips For Icy Conditions

As the winter conditions worsen we all need to be careful on the roads, especially if there is a chance you may have to drive in icy conditions.

In order to keep you safe, here are a few tips to help you prepare for driving in icy conditions.

Driving in Winter

  • Firstly, think about whether your journey is really necessary.
  • Tyre grip is hugely reduced on icy roads, and braking distances are much longer.
  • Even if you avoid an accident, your car may get stuck – potentially leading to a long walk home.
  • Traffic congestion is likely to be worse too, if you don’t get stuck, the driver in front of you probably will…
  • Before you leave home, make sure you pack a charged mobile phone (and a charger cable), a bottle of water, a few snacks and a warm blanket. If snowfall looks likely, a set of snow socks – high-grip fabric covers fitted over the car’s driven wheels – is worth having, too.
  • If you’re driving to meet someone, let them know your route and when you expect to arrive. Make sure the car’s windows and mirrors are completely clear. Before you set off and in cars with various drive modes, select the best option for cold conditions.
  • Don’t forget to check available weather reports for you journey.

Have you had an accident due to icy conditions? Has this affected you ability to drive? You may be able to claim for the physical strain this has caused you.

Medical Negligence: Refusal of Treatment

Medical negligence can happen to anyone at any age. Take a look at this case study to learn more: An eight month old boy being denied “potentially life-saving” treatment at a UK hospital that would be given it at any hospital in America.

The parents broke down in tears as they listened to medical evidence relating to his rare genetic condition and what his doctors say is a “vanishingly small” chance of his survival.

But an American doctor who has agreed to attempt a pioneering treatment for his disorder, said that it was “reasonable” to attempt to save his life and if he were in a hospital in the USA his parents would have the option.

The UK based hospital applied to the High Court for permission to withdraw life support and argue that he should not be taken abroad for treatment as it will prolong his suffering.

Accident at Work: Forklift Truck

Today, we talk about a Accident at Work that could happen to anyone. A member of staff at a logistics firm had her life changed forever after an incident with a Forklift truck.

The warehouse did not have sufficient segregation between forklifts and pedestrians which meant a forklift was able to cross onto a pedestrian pathway causing a life-changing injury to the staff members leg.

The staff member was rushed to hospital where surgeons tried to save their leg but their foot had to be amputated. Over the next few months this injury required further operations on their leg, eventually meaning a further amputation.

In the UK, up to five people a day have a life-changing injury caused by Forklift Trucks ranging from loss of life, amputation and broken bones.

Hair Extension Damage: What do you need to know?

Damages Case Study

A horrified customer has been left bald after her hair extensions were fitted with an incorrect glue. This is an example of Hair Extension Damage.

The 38-year-old was left in agony and with a bleeding scalp and believes she was left with no choice but to shave her hair off altogether after her hair extensions were glued to her scalp.

The customer said she was gobsmacked that this has happened and would not wish for someone else to go through the same pain she has.

The mother of two asked a mobile beautician who had previously done spray tans for her to fit her hair extensions believing that she knew what she was doing.

Halfway through the session her scalp became really sore and by the evening the pain was unbearable.

She said she was told the new hair would ‘slacken off’ and the pain would ease the next day but 24 hours later she was still suffering.

It was only after a trip to a local hairdressers to get them removed it was explained that they had in fact been fitted with an incorrect glue.

The son, aged 8, was diagnosed with a sprained ankle and sent home. Only for the pain and suffering to continue which led them back to hospital and being told that her son had, in fact, broken his ankle. The fact that he was suffering from broken bones without having the proper treatment left the son feeling scared and traumatized from the pain.

This was a horrifying ordeal for the mother of two, who had to witness her son’s pain and suffering through mis-diagnosis of his broken bones.

Originally, doctors advised that a course of Calpol and exercise would help with the pain. However, upon their return to the A and E department, a cast was fitted.

Workplace Accident: Man Loses Fingers

A Workplace Accident can change lives

A terrible workplace accident occurred at a  decorative panel manufacturing company. The business was fined after a worker was injured when using an industrial saw.

Leeds Magistrates’ Court heard how, in March 2016, an employee of an industrial cutting company was working alongside colleagues using a beam saw to cut sheets of MDF. When he reached into a hole in the fixed guarding, which he believed was a viewing hole, to clear waste offcuts, his fingers became trapped under a drive chain and sprocket. As he pulled his hand out, three fingers were severed.

An investigation found that, while suitable guarding was in place on other areas of the machine, the company had failed to identify the hazard posed by the open hole where access to the dangerous moving parts was possible and injury could be caused.

The company was found to have breached the code of practice for the safe use of machinery in the workplace and was ordered to pay costs of £45,859.
